Searching For a Black Writer
Maya Johnson
"I think the other writers, always searching for their next story, looked at me–my brown skin, bright orange hair, and hot pink lipstick-and wanted to collect me. I was something peculiar to them.
And I was more than happy to let them–if I got something in return."

It was a privilege to be the editor of "Searching for a Black Writer" by author Maya Johnson, an Afrofuturist, storyteller, essayist, fiction writer, and magazine journalist. This self-published memoir explores Maya's personal journey, delving into her past and present. It's a narrative that resonates with themes of tokenism, black excellence, motherhood, perfectionism, and spirituality, all guiding Maya back to her roots.

Close collaboration with Maya was essential. Consistent communication allowed us to make informed decisions about revisions. Our process included regular consultations, draft reviews, and detailed redline edits and notes.
I meticulously edited her manuscript to ensure clarity, coherence, and grammatical accuracy while preserving her unique voice and style. My process involved multiple rounds of draft reviews, providing detailed feedback and specific suggestions for improvement. I produced comprehensive redline edits and margin notes, pinpointing areas for enhancement and recommending specific changes.
I fact-checked for accuracy, standardized terminology, and ensured consistency in tone and style. I corrected punctuation, grammar, and syntax errors to maintain a professional and polished final product. Additionally, I conducted thorough line editing to improve sentence structure and readability, ensuring that every paragraph conveyed Maya's message effectively.

Below, I have attached the first [number] chapters as well as my corresponding redline edits. I highly suggest a full read of the book to appreciate its depth and significance.
